Current Position: Senior Research Scientists at the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM; belonging to the National Research Council, CSIC).

Education: Undergraduate degrees in Pharmacy (1971-1976), Biology (1979-1983) and Master (1984-1985) in the Effect of toxics on Marine Microorganisms (University of Barcelona). PhD in Biological Sciences carried out at the Institut of Marine Sciences (CSIC) and University of Barcelona (1989). Post-doc at the Institute of Ecosystem Studies (NY, USA) under the supervision of Dr. ML Pace.

Research interests: It encompasses aquatic microbial ecology including viruses within the microbial food webs. How protists and viruses control bacterial biomass, production and changes in bacterial diversity. Virus identification, isolation and virus host-range specificity of marine microorganisms.

Teaching Master and PhD courses (1994-1998) at the University of Barcelona, University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (2005-2010), and at the International Univesity Menendez Pelayo (2009-present). Participation in Summer School Courses in Norway, France and Barcelona.Advisor of 4 PhD projects, several masters and examiner on 20PhD dissertations in Spain, France and Norway.

Publications and International meetings: Publication of a total of 100 research papers of which 80 are in SCI journals.Coauthor of 12 book chapters and has participated and attended in 110 International meetings.
